For the past 10 years Brisbanites have been able to sneak a look behind the scenes at some of the city’s most iconic buildings and places through Brisbane Open House.
Run in conjunction with World Architecture Day, the event is an important reminder of the role architecture plays in our daily lives, and gives members of the community a chance to become more engaged with the buildings and urban landscapes that are the face of our river city.
This year there are, incredibly, over 100 buildings and spaces open for viewing! With so many options to choose from, if can be challenging to know where to start. To help, our Associate Director Michael Ellis has put together is top 3 hit list for Brisbane Open House 2019.
A wonderful building with a wonderful cause.
Hummingbird house provides accommodation, support & care services for families with children affected by life-limiting conditions. I visited this building a few years ago and highly recommend checking it out to see how materials and spatial configurations can transform a medical facility to a place that feels like home.
Go behind the scenes and check out the ABC studios at Southbank.
Taking prime position in the parklands, the building balances a series of intricate screens with large expanses of glazing facing the river including the radio studio ‘floating’ over the entrance. Internally, a restricted palette of painted concrete is balanced with timber, and plenty of natural light has been designed to filter into the working spaces.
3. D House
A Brisbane classic.
This house showcases the carefully considered and detailed approach to residential design by award winning architects Donovan Hill. Sitting behind what would appear to be a blank wall fronting the road, an interesting screened window provides engagement with the streetscape and suggests a more elaborate space sits beyond.
Brisbane Open House runs from 12-13 October 2019.
